Arbeia (South Shields)

I’m at Arbeia Roman Fort on a beautiful sunny morning. It’s deserted and I’m sitting atop a reconstructed section of wall.

The reconstructed stuff here is particularly impressive – a gatehouse (see picture!), barrack block and commanding officer’s quarters. They even have real smells of herbs and bread in the kitchen!

One corner of the fort has had houses built over it, and much has not been excavated, but it’s an amazing place. So glad I came!

Apparently it was stationed here so far east to watch for boats sneaking up the Tyne. The wall itself starts some way west at Wallsend (Segedunum) and that’s where I’m heading next.

Making the most of my selfie stick!
