Thessaloniki: bustling city, enormous museum

Thessaloniki is a great place – so much going on, and so busy. The anti-Christian emperor Galerius has made his mark here with several monuments – an arch, a rotunda, a palace… and there is a lot more to see, whether one is looking for Roman, early Christian, Byzantine, Ottoman, you name it.

The museum is huge, and contains enough material for many museums, including the wonderful Derveni crater, a lovely mosaic, some beautiful gold jewellery, a papyrus which is identified as the “oldest European book in existence” and plenty besides.

I had a bit of fun with some of the many many faces of ancient people depicted on statues and reliefs in the museum…
