Mainz: atmospheric underground temple, Roman ships, and museum with treasures

Mainz is a beautiful place with lots of charm, and it’s busy with people in the summer. Vans in the square this weekend have been selling currywurst, beer and all the usual things. I tore myself away from that to visit a great little temple to the Egyptian goddess Isis and the goddess Magna Mater, tucked away under a shopping mall. It was atmospheric and very well presented with an excellent guide book in English.

After that there’s the Roman ship museum, with several ship fragments and more, plus some great reconstructions that really made me think about the way ships and rowers in the ancient world worked.

Then there are some great finds in the spookily-lit ground floor of the Landesmuseum, including a Roman sword, helmets and shield bosses.

There’s even a vestigial Roman Theatre out beyond the ship museum, with its own train station!

Mainz is a great place to visit, in short.
