Trier: towering gate, great museum and more

The most obvious Roman symbol of Trier is the massive Porta Nigra, the town gate which has become blackened over time. It was hosting part of a music festival last night, hence the stage on one side in these pictures.

But there is more to Trier: a Roman Bridge, a basilica of Constantine, Roman baths, an amphitheatre and a museum full of treats like mosaics, sculpture, glass and gold.

I have only been in Trier less than a day but already I’m well impressed – it’s got a great atmosphere and plenty to see.
